Jahrhunderts k\u00e4mpften Katholizismus und Protestantismus um die Vorherrschaft, und Komponisten gerieten zwischen die Fronten. Sie waren auf die Kirche als Hauptarbeitgeber angewiesen, doch unter Heinrich VIII. \u00e4nderten sich schlagartig die Regeln: Katholische Musikformen, lateinische Sprache, traditionelle Texte wurden nicht mehr geduldet. Wer sich nicht rasch genug anpasste, dem konnte das Schafott drohen.
